The Current Situation of Afghanistan
The US and the Taliban signed Doha Accord in February
2020 and direct discussion started between Taliban and the US representatives. The Taliban promised that they would not permit
any militant group to utilize Afghan soil for attacks on any country which had paved
the way for the Doha Accord. According to Doha Accord the US and its NATO allies would withdraw all
troops in 14 months if the Taliban upheld its promises and proceeding with national peace
talks. This peace process has generated hope for a political
settlement to the four-decade-long conflict.
The security situation throughout the country remains dire, with high levels of violence against civilians and Afghan security forces even as the Taliban have refrained from attacking US forces. The Afghan government is suffering from high casualties in recent days as fighting is continued in 26 out of total 34 provinces and Taliban are capturing provinces after provinces. Both Afghan government and Taliban are not on one page and no political settlement is foreseen. There is a threat of civil war in Afghanistan which will definitely have severe repercussion for the regional peace.
Pakistan the next door neighbour is facing greater geopolitical
threat from deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. It will be again confronting
security and foreign policy challenges along with fear of spill over of Afghan
crisis to its land. China is also worried of this situation. China tried hard with the help of Pakistan to bring peaceful political solution to Afghanistan o avoid any spill over of terrorism to its western region, Xinjiang. It is also threatening for its BRI and CPEC ventures and regional connectivity desire.
Afghan political unity is delicate. Most of the Afghans
desire peace and preserve the current constitutional system i.e. democracy, personal freedoms, a free media,
and women’s rights. The Taliban have however assured that their views have
changed from the extreme restrictions which they applied cruelly in the
1990s.
It is a harsh reality
that the US is leaving Afghan land hap hazard just like its invasion of
Afghanistan was some 20 years ago when there were no clear reasons for the
superpower to war and 20 years later it’s leaving Afghanistan in a hurry with
warring Afghan groups fighting for power.
A successful political resolution of the conflict leading to an inclusive and
sustainable peace is the best way to lasing peace.
